#154 –Karen Thorpe - A Conversation about Recovery and Perspective

Welcome to the #ShareYourHotness Podcast episode 154!
On January 1, 2021, at 10:45 pm the doorbell rang. A police officer stood at the door and though she didn't truly hear the words -- she could see the policeman's lips uttering, "I am sorry, Scott has passed away."
As the mother of three children, and hearing this for the third in her life, she fell to the floor, screaming in pain. She asked over and over - Why, knowing she would never know the answer.
As the days moved forward, she moved with them, if only as a shadow but she still moved. She had to.
Because that is how one survives losing a daughter who only lived 8 days (1978), and a son who died at age 19 (1999) in a vehicle accident. Now, her only child had died of a drug overdose at 37.
She fought the addiction battle alongside her younger son for over five and a half years.
Yes, she grieved and still does for each of her children.
Each loss has taught her life will always have meaning and purpose as long as she keeps going.
Currently, she is in the process of writing a book and beginning to speak about resilience in grief, the pain of family addiction, and how 'recovery" lives in both of these worlds.
Living in beautiful Detroit Lakes, MN, with her husband John, and their cats, Kipper, and Wilson, she and John enjoy retirement and spend a good deal of time traveling to experience other parts of the country and the world.
This isn't a plot in a fictional character's story. This happened and is life lived by this amazing woman --- Karen Thorpe.
